Central Aceh landslides and Mount Semeru eruptions hit Indonesia. As of 13 September 2026, heavy rains caused landslides across seven villages in four districts of Central Aceh Regency, Aceh Province, Indonesia. There were one death and 13 others were injured. The landslides blocking several national, provincial, and local roads, and damaging homes. The Central Aceh Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and relevant agencies assessed affected areas, while a wheel loader and an excavator were deployed to clear debris blocking the roads. In the meantime, Mount Semeru in East Java erupted four times during 14-15 September, sending volcanic ash as high as 1,000 metres above its summit. The public was advised to refrain from activities in the southeastern sector along the Besuk Kobokan drainage and remain vigilant for potential hot clouds, lava avalanches, and lava flows along rivers originating from the volcano.

Landslides in northern Thailand blocked highway and damaged school. As of 11 September 2026, heavy rain triggered a landslide in Nan Province, northern Thailand. Mud and large trees covered both lanes of Highway 1148, leaving all vehicles unable to pass, according to a notice issued by the local authorities. A team of personnel, together with heavy machinery, was dispatched to remove debris and restore access and installed warning signs ahead of the landslide site. Another expanding landslide forced the closured of a mountainside school, causing large cracks in a kindergarten building, a canteen, a shop, and a swimming pool. Engineers determined that the damaged buildings were unsafe. Consequently, officials arranged alternative temporary premises for displaced students, with long-term plans to relocated the school.

Tropical depression displaced 2,500 people in Viet Nam. A tropical depression brought heavy rain and flooding in several mountainous areas of Quang Tri province, Viet Nam. On 13 September 2026, the water level in the Thach Han River rose above Warning Level 3, flooding low-lying areas in Ai Tu Commune. Floodwaters cut off access to several villages, sweeping barges into the My Chanh Railway Bridge and trapping residents in isolated areas. Authorities evacuated more than 2,500 people to safety, issued public warnings, monitored high-risk areas, and kept rescue personnel and equipment on standby.

Torrential rain prompted emergency response in southern P.R. China. A tropical low-pressure system in the South China Sea threatened southern P.R. China with torrential downpours and high disaster risk. China’s State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters issued a Level IV emergency response for Hainan Province on 12 September 2026, followed by a red alert for heavy rain and the initiation of emergency safety measures. Education authorities in Wanning, Hainan ordered all-campus training institutions to suspend offline operation through 14 September. Local authorities also deployed 24-hour emergency watches and warned residents to stay clear of flooded streets and unstable slopes as the storm system passes.

Landslide at Mt. Fuji and volcanic warnings at two other volcanoes hit Japan. As of 9 September 2026, a landslide hit Mount Fuji in Japan after heavy rain inundated parts of the country’s central region. Debris covered three vehicles, with no injuries or casualties reported. Authorities closed the Fuji Subaru Line, one of the main access roads to the mountain, due to the heavy rain, and dispatched a police mountain rescue team to the scene. Meanwhile, the Sakurajima volcano erupted on Kyushu Island two days later. Authorities issued warnings for ashfall and banned entry within a 2-kilometre radius of the crater due to the risk of lava flows and falling volcanic rocks. Furthermore, the eruption alert level for Mount Tokachidake in Hokkaido was raised to Level 3 on 12 September following increased volcanic seismic activity. The Kamifurano town government issued an evacuation order for the Fukiage Onsen area and advised vulnerable residents in nearby areas to evacuate.

Cambodia targets 1 million MT of rice exports in 2026. Cambodia’s public and private sector leaders have pledged to strengthen the rice value chain by stabilising paddy rice prices and improving access to finance to support the country’s 1-MT milled rice export target for 2026. The state-owned Agriculture and Rural Development Bank (ARDB) has prepared a 200 million USD revolving credit facility to help rice mills purchase and stockpile rice paddy during the harvest season, supporting timely procurement and market price stability. Cambodia exported 792,212 MT of milled rice worth 464 million USD in the first eight months of 2026, with shipments reaching 66 markets through 61 companies .

Indonesia extends rice aid through December 2026. Indonesia will extend its rice food aid programme through December 2026, with the government approving an additional 1 million tonnes of rice for distribution during October-December. The additional allocation follows the disbursement of food aid for the July-September 2026 period, under which each recipient received 10 kg of rice per month. Each eligible recipient will receive 10 kg of rice per month, with the programme prioritising households in the poorest 40 percent of the population. The government is also preparing 1 million tonnes of rice under the Food Supply and Price Stabilisation (SPHP) programme and 150,000 MT of SPHP corn for small livestock farmers. In addition, 380,000 MT of rice will be auctioned as raw material for the rice flour industry, with a minimum price of 11,000 IDR (0.62 USD) per kg.

Philippines seeks long-term rice deal with Vietnam amid Middle East conflict. According to the Philippine President, the government is working to ensure sufficient food supplies and contain food prices as the Middle East conflict drives oil and commodity price volatility. Currently, the Philippines is pursuing a long-term rice supply arrangement with Vietnam, with talks covering import volumes, pricing, and a possible long-term contract. Discussions remain ongoing. The government is also assisting vulnerable households and coordinating with local governments to cushion the impact of rising global energy and commodity prices.
