ASEAN Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserve

The ASEAN Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserve (APTERR) has continually supported 5,650 MT for additional earthquake response and strengthen emergency preparedness in Myanmar.

Dr. Choomjet Karnjanakesorn, General Manager of the ASEAN Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserve (APTERR) Secretariat, on 11 December 2025, signed the Memoranda of Agreement (MoAs) with Dr. Ye Tint Tun, Director-General of the Department of Agriculture (DOA), Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, Myanmar, for 3,275 MT of additional rice assistance for earthquake-affected communities, contributed by Republic of Korea (3,000 MT) and the People’s Republic of China (P.R. China) (275 MT).

This brings the total of APTERR rice assistance for the March 2025 earthquake in Myanmar to 6,775 MT, including earlier release. Following the earthquake on 28 March 2025, APTERR had already released 3,500 MT of rice contributed by Korea for 3,000 MT and P.R. China for 500 MT, which had already been pre-positioned in Myanmar, to quickly assist affected people in Nay Pyi Taw, Sagaing, Mandalay and Shan.

In addition to emergency assistance, the APTERR Secretariat and the DOA also signed the MoAs for 2,375 MT of rice under Tier 3’s pre-positioned rice system for the FY2025, contributed by Korea (2,000 MT) and P.R. China (375 MT) to strengthen emergency preparedness and ensure a timely response to future disasters in Myanmar.

The APTERR Secretariat, in close collaboration with the DOA, continues to work hand in hand to enhance food security and resilience amid the growing challenges posed by natural disasters and climate change. Dr. Choomjet emphasised also the importance of emergency preparedness and early warning systems in ensuring timely and effective response to increasingly frequent disasters.
