The APTERR Secretariat visited Lao PDR on 17-18 July 2025 to bolster collaboration with the Lao government led by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MAE) on emergency preparedness and response through the APTERR activities.
Dr. Choomjet Karnjanakesorn, General Manager of the APTERR Secretariat, along with Mr. Aro Kasakawa, Japanese Expert, and Ms. Jansinee Kankaew, Head of Implementation, held a meeting with Dr. Boundeth Southavilay, Director General of Department of Planning and Cooperation of MAE, together with his MAE team and the representative from the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare. The discussion focused on the implementation plan for this year’s Tier 3 programme and the potential for Lao PDR’s participation in the Tier 1 programme.
Both sides agreed to accelerate the release of APTERR rice to ensure a time response in meeting the urgent needs of affected people.
The APTERR team also visited WFP’s warehouses in Vientiane to inspect the prepositioned APTERR rice. Currently, a total of 3, 800 MT contributed by the People’s Republic of China (500 MT), Japan (300 MT) and the Republic of Korea (3,000 MT), have been stockpiled in Lao PDR. All APTERR stocks have been well-maintained and ready for rapid deployment in times of emergency in Lao PDR.
